Does Not Compute

Get a Mac!! You'll love it. Seriously though, if you can hold out, wait. New tech is always around the corner.
I'd say get a mac, but there are a few things you can do for your laptop, too. If you're running XP, you may adjust some of your settings when you're on the battery. It may be something particular with the brand of laptop. My work Fujitsu laptop doesn't have much past the standard OS management, which is to shut off the display, hard drives and hibernate. What you're looking for is something to change the power management scheme between being on AC and battery. My mac has these sort of settings that it switches to when it goes to battery. It utilizes less CPU utilization to conserve power (which consumes and therefore puts out a little less heat)

I'll tell you, the MacBook Pro still gets really warm on your lap. My wife got one of these iLaps for herself to keep the warm aluminum off her legs while she works. You might be able to find something similar. Also, check to make sure your vent ducts aren't being blocked or dirty. That can kick the cooling fan into high gear if it's not able to conduct the radiated heat away from the CPU. I don't have any experience with how the MacBook performs as far as heat output goes.
You could always go for a MacBook instead of a MacBook Pro. Still a great machine, but it won't set you back quite as much. I can also guide you towards some great apps for doing work while logged into the Mac OS instead of Windows.

And I can give you the inside scoop about which laptops kick major but running Windows if your going to go that route; just remember how much you wfh and if you can do everything from a mac
